In the summer of 2007, the BDC wrote a one-of-a-kind plan for the safe evacuation of the city of New Orleans.  Printed in English and Spanish, the plan includes a personal preparation and evacuation guide and a neighborhood preparation and evacuation guide.  These resources -- and others -- are available below.

The personal guide includes extensive check-lists for go-kits, home kits, financial and legal documents, and special considerations for seniors and pets, among many other things.

The neighborhood guide instructs neighborhood leaders on ways to prepare local populations for evacuations without counting on government assistance.

In the event of a storm, New Orleanians should check NOLA.com’s Hurricane Center, which is continually updated.

To assure safe departure and return, New Orleanians should also be aware of the city's  and surrounding parishes' contraflow evacuation routes and three-tiered re-entry plan.     To plan a route to a specific destination using a contraflow route, visit contraflowmaps.com.  Applications for re-entry placards are available here.
